Connor Jennings squared for Harvey Gilmour to find the bottom corner from 18 yards at Prenton Park as Macclesfield equalled the English league record of 36 consecutive games without a win. On-loan midfielder Gilmour has now scored three times in two league games.
They have not won a Football League game since they were relegated from League Two in 2012, matching Derby’s barren run in 2007 and 2008.
Earlier, Tranmere’s Adam Buxton hit a post with a first-half free-kick, while Michael Rose also hit a post for Macc.
James Norwood was also thwarted by visiting goalkeeper Rhys Taylor.
Jennings struck wide when well placed as Rovers chased a second, but Micky Mellon’s side rise to fourth with a third consecutive League Two victory.
Macclesfield were National League champions in 2017-18 but are the only English Football League side yet to win this season.
They sacked manager Mark Yates on Monday, with assistants Danny Whitaker and Neil Howarth taking charge against Tranmere.
