Forest Green 1-1 Tranmere Rovers (1-2 AGG) (13/05/2019) Sky Bet League 2 Play Off Semi Final Leg 2 Review:
Unbelievable! That’s simply how this feels. Tranmere have now reached Wembley for the third successive season and are now 90 minutes away from a place back in League 1.
I don’t think anybody could have called how nail-bitingly stressful and tense last nights game was. Overall, the performance was another Micky Mellon masterclass – from defence to attack, on the ball and in the press. In defence, the back line of Jake Caprice, Sid Nelson, Manny and Rides all bossed and controlled our opening third, this restricted FGR to half the amount of shots Rovers had. Davey Perkins, Jay Harris and Banksy all put in formidable stagings. Kieron Morris, who played down the wing, was a silkily-skilled magician, trapping the ball effortlessly. However, the 2 men who always seem to run the show – James Norwood and Connor Jennings – were brilliant as ever, they didn’t stop running all game. Absolutely sublime work rate from both of them.
All thoughts and condolences are with Connor Jennings, his family and his friends. It was confirmed after the game that Connor’s grandfather passed away on Friday afternoon and he chose to play both games; the man is a true credit to his family and he is a pleasure to watch week in and week out.
There was something about the electric atmosphere at the game- the fans, the players, the staff; we all knew how big this game was, we all knew exactly what was at stake. Every single player put a shift in during the second half to defend our one-goal advantage. It all paid off! Finally, we have gotten the better of Forest Green! One day short of the 2 year anniversary of when the Green Devils defeated Rovers at Wembley, in the National League play off final, we finally have our play off vengeance on them. We will now meet Newport County on May 25th at Wembley for a place in League 1!
Last nights’ draw confirmed Tranmere’s spot in an EFL play off final for the first time since 1991, which was against Bolton. The lads are bidding to return the club to England’s third tier for the first time since our relegation back in 2014.
All of Tranmere’s promotion hopes seemed dashed in the opening 15 minutes when Joseph Mills headed home for FGR. The SWA urged the Whites on however, this all paid off 15 minutes later when a stunning volley by former FGR man James Norwood levelled the scoreline. Backed by around 1000 members of the SWA, it is no surprise why they are called the 12th man! They have been phenomenal from August to May and will continue to be so next season.
We are in the League 2 play off final! Let it sink in.
The League 2 play off final!
Let’s get back where we actually belong!
Up the whites!
Overall a great atmosphere. Mostly created by the Tranmere fans, FGR constantly singing Allez wasn’t great.
Home support- 3*
Only had a few songs to sing, less noisy than the travelling contingent
Away support- 5*
Over 1000 on a Monday night, 3.5 hours away from home, a pitch invasion and singing for 90 minutes straight. Perfect.
Another defensive MOTM, we look brilliant at the back. Anyone in the team could’ve gotten it for this game! Rides was brilliant at getting forward and getting back. He has a point to prove against Newport.
Forest Green vs. Tranmere Rovers (13/05/2019) Sky Bet League 2 Play Off Semi Final 2nd Leg Match Preview:
On Friday, Tranmere got their first win over the Green Devils in over 3 and a half years. This victory means we take a 1-0 lead into the reverse leg at The New Lawn on Monday evening.
Rovers are now only 90 minutes away from their 3rd Wembley visit inside 24 months. Monday’s monumental game with Forest Green is Rovers’ biggest away game in a number of years. Confidence is high amongst the lads and Micky; who masterminded Shrewsbury’s promotion from this division in 2015. MM will have the boys in white in the right mindset to get to Wembley again. Our last away play off game was a 3-0 victory against Aldershot, a game still remembered fondly by Rovers fans. Nevertheless, our last away play off game in the EFL was a 2-0 defeat dished out to us by Hartlepool – the same result tomorrow will mean that Forest Green reach the white arch.
We will have to battle hard to keep the likes of Christian Doidge and Reece Brown at bay. If the defence play how they did on Friday it should make the task much easier. Friday’s defensive display was one of the best we’ve witnessed in years!
The Whites have no new injury concerns ahead of Monday, despite numerous fans holding a great deal of perturb in regard to James Norwood – Rovers’ top scorer looked to have injured his back on Friday night but soldiered on.
It is frustrating to only have a 1 goal lead ahead of tomorrow’s game, especially considering the amount of time where we had extra numbers on the field in the first leg. However, if you were offered a 1 goal lead going into a play off 2nd leg against a bogey team you’d take it! It is key we don’t sit back tomorrow, we need to push on for a 2nd goal before we do anything else.
It is expected that we will have over 1000 fans travelling down to Stroud tomorrow evening, truly brilliant support from the SWA once again!
Keep the faith, support the lads and help them get over the line and through to Wembley again! We’re 90 minutes away from an EFL play off final!
